Can you own a pet platypus?

Well I do not think they allow them as pets, and I do not even know of any zoos that have them. They would be a very exotic pet and would probably cost Tens of thousands if not a hundred thousand dollars to get one, with the proper licenses and habitat for one. If you are in Australia you might have better luck, because they would be more likely to have people who take care of sick ones or are allowed to have them for different reasons. My best guess is that these are not good pets and have not been domesticated, so are more likely to be something that lives in an enclosure if you own one, not something you snuggle with.

No, it would not be totally awesome. They need a constant source of water, as they spend most of their time in it. And, they have a poisonous spike on the back of their leg, so that would be a dangerous pet to have anyway.

I know that they have poisonous barbs in their feet. Probably not a good pet. There's exotic pets, then there's a platypus.

You don't say what country you're in. I'm in Australia and I'll bet my life on the answer being "NO". They're unique to Australia and are protected under Australian law. And yes, the males are poisonous. They have enough venom to kill a mid sized dog or inflict severe pain on a human. Why on earth would you want a platypus anyway? They're shy, elusive, very sensitive to noise and changes in the quality of the water they swim in and are most active at night. That's why we see their exhibits at nature parks kept in semi darkness so they'll be encouraged to come out for people can view them. My advice is to buy yourself a proper "pet" like a cat, dog or bird.

Probably not, they're considered wild animals. I don't think you would want to, either. They have spurs on their back feet that they jab into you if they consider you a threat. It's one of the mos painful venomous stings in the world, though I don't think it;s deadly. The pain will cause you to double over and vomit in agony... not a desireable trait in a pet...
