Question: I have Works Suite 2001 with Word 2000 SR-1 -
I have no idea how to do this but I really don't want to buy something I don't need when all I need is Word on my new Vista computer.

You don't know how to do what? To use Works Suite 2001?
If you need Word, you'll have to buy Word. (Or, some unethical people steal it.)
You might also want to look at http://www.openoffice.org/ for a free office suite that is in many ways similar to and compatible with MS-Office. (It's hard to beat free!) But it's still different, so you'll still have a learning curve to face.
In other words, you can learn to use Works Suite 2001, or you can learn to use OO.o, or you can pony up the cash and buy MS-Word (MS-Office, probably).
One more advantage to OO.o over Microsoft products; the file format is open, so you'll never find that your documents are held hostage in a format that requires you to buy Microsoft products (or anyone's products) to edit.
