Can I change the cpu on my Gateway GT 4024 with ease? It currently has a Pentium D 805 and I want to insert a Pentium D 950. Yesterday I tried to insert a Core2Duo E4700 and it wouldnt boot... Just was sitting at a black screen and fans were blowing... Bios wouldnt even come up.... So... I am hoping if i plop in a Pentirum D 950 it will boot up... Any ideas? Or is a bios update required?

The motherboard chipset determines what kind of processor it will or will not support. More than likely yours doesn't support Core 2 Duo's.
Yea the P D 950 should work as long as the pin configuration is the same.
Not to sure whether the cooler you are using will be able to handle the added heat the 950 will produce though if it was the stock cooler from the 805.

the cpu has to be compatible with the motherboard. if you find out the model and revision of the board you can look online for a bios update that will accept that cpu. no guarantees.
