my limited understanding is that in the wild they are competitive for both space[territory ] and food.. both will kill each others young given half a chance.domestic animals still have a few of their survival genes left . my dogs were born while my cat looked on .they grew up together. my boy dog wants to be the alpha so keeps on attacking [viciously] my cat . the female dog is submissive to the cat. we no longer can have the male near the 18 y.o. cat.he senses her vulnerability and would kill her if he gets a chance. hope some of this helps

well........they don't necessarily not get along...many cats and dogs actually get along. It could be the species, the size, or even the loudness...for example, a small kitten will probably not like a german shepherd or other big dogs....hopefully this was helpful..

This is not true for every cat and every dog - Think of it more like a common prejudice. (Like how some whites still dont like blacks, and vice versa.)

My dog cuddles up with my cats, and he is a great big german shepherd! So obviously he is not "racist," lol.

they are natural enemies. Think Catholic vs Protestant.

They are just too different. Dogs are needy and clingy. Cats need their space.

natural instinct, if they grow up together they can get along...depends on the animal itself.
