What are some tips on keeping snakes out of your path and keeping out of theirs?

I am a geologist doing my field work in east Alabama. We have a few venomous species here. I have never dealt with the possibility of snake encounters before and I am a little nervous. Mostly I stay on roads where the rocks are exposed, but I do have to venture in the woods and near creeks. What are the best ways we can avoid each other? Thanks.

Update:

Bells? You are aware that snakes have no external hearing organs, right?

If its a high snake area, you might want to invest in some heavy leather or plastic shin guards, and make sure your boots are leather.

However if you are just worried about a chance encounter then just a couple precautions should save you a lot of hassle. First, never step over anything, such as a rock or a log. Always step up onto it first, then down the other side, once you have looked down. Second, avoid areas of dense underbrush if possible. Finally, third, carry a walking stick, just so you can poke into areas that are questionable before you stick your hand or foot into them.

Always be careful when picking up some of the larger rocks, especially ones with some type of hole underneath them.

    Hope it helps!

I actually saw this on a science show...snakes will avoid you if you have the scent of gasoline on your shoes. Weird, huh?

make noise, and walk in the middle of all trails or roads or paths.....stay away from the grassy edges that they could be using for cover.

Make noise. When crossing a log or boulder, step on it, then away from it, not over it.

Put bells on your shoelaces. And always be attentive of your surroundings.
