I am a structural geologist with a BS in geology from the University of Tennessee (UTK) and I am working on my MS at Auburn University. I am a native Virginian. My thesis research involves mapping the Red Hill Quadrangle in Alabama and studying the relationships of the low grade Jacksons Gap Group to the high grade rocks of the Inner Piedmont and possibly reassigning them to another terrane and explaining why they have become misplaced. I will be staying in Auburn for the 09-10 year to finish up. After a long journey, I have become a theistic Buddhist. I recognize a higher power, but I choose to follow the teachings of Buddhism. As a scientist, I accept the tenets of science and of all that is real and observable. I do not allow myself to be blinded by books written by men and rhetoric dogma.

  • Why has my kitten become so sleepy?

I brought home a 6 month old kitty last week to save her from the shelter. At first she was very scared of her surroundings but she came around and has been playing with the toys I bought her. But today, a week after I brought her home, she has slept all day. She hasn't eaten today and she won't play. She isn't running a temperature, or has any visible symptoms of illness aside from lethargy and no appetite. Is she just recovering from the stress of her move, is she just sleeping like kitties do, or should I be more worried. It was just strange to see her go from playful and jumping on the curtains to just sleeping all the time. She is responsive to my love and purrs whenever I pet her.

  • How to cover beads with spray acrylic evenly?

I make paper beads and I seal them with Mod Podge, but to eliminate tackiness I want to use a spray acrylic sealer. Since this isn't a flat surface, what are some suggestions for getting the spray on the beads evenly? I see people saying they use spray sealer on beads but they don't say how.

  • How do I keep Mod Podge from getting tacky?

I make paper beads and like to seal them with Mod Podge. Even after a while on the drying rack, they will still get stuck together when I store them. How can I prevent this? Or should I switch to a different sealer?

  • Why do I still have stubble after a leg wax?

I had a leg wax a month ago after 2 weeks of growth. I still had stubble but assumed it was the next cycle of growth. I had a leg wax 2 days ago after a MONTH of growth and I still have stubble. Is it the next growth cycle or are the hairs breaking? Should I leave it be until my next wax or not wait as long between waxes? I am SO tired of shaving....I really want leg waxing to work for me. But its a little disheartening when my legs still feel like sandpaper.....

  • Is there Theistic Buddhism?

After a very long, and perhaps still ongoing, battle with matters of faith, I feel that the teachings and practices are the most in line with how I feel I should be. I was raised a fundamentalist Pentecostal and then became Catholic in college. Now, at 27, while I believe Jesus was a person, I can no longer accept his divinity. I believe he was a man with right thought and speech. And there are many others like him, including the Buddha who preceded him. However, I still believe in a higher power that I can only describe as a "God", who is a creator (in the sense of Deism; I'm a geologist so I accept science above all) Can I combine a belief in a God with following a Buddhist path?

  • What is a good car value for a tight budget?

I am a graduate student and my finances are tight. My 91 Nissan Sentra finally developed a problem not economically sound to fix. I've had it for 9 years and its the only car I have ever had so I am new to car buying. I am looking for some advice on some good, reliable cars out there that are a good value for the money. Obviously, I am looking at pre-owned vehicles.

I know prices vary from place to place, but I want some makes and models to focus on first so I'm not drowning in options.

Any advice and suggestions would be appreciated.

  • How can I get good, but low impact, cardio?

I recently signed up for a daily fitness program. Its 4 weeks and I am in week 4, but I signed up for another 4 weeks. I developed some very bad knee pain. Last week my doctor told me I had patellofemoral pain syndrome. My knees are causing me a great deal of discomfort and I have to keep low-impact. But I feel I am not getting a good cardio workout at the daily session. The instructor makes sure I take it slow to avoid injury. What is something I could add to my day that is low impact, but gives me the cardio I need?

I need a new pair of athletic shoes. I have a pair of New Balance shoes which have served me well for everyday use, but when I work out my arches (or rather where they should be) start to ache badly. My feet are also narrow. Who makes a good shoe for my narrow, flat feet?

  • Has anyone had any experience with ParkRideFlyUSA?

Due to school circumstances I couldn't book my trip home for Christmas until the 24th and I am leaving out of Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL) so parking will be tough. I found ParkRideFlyUSA doing a Google search and it seems to be a good deal. Has anyone ever used their services (even if not at ATL)?

  • How can I deal with the early effects of Effexor?

I was just switched over from Wellbutrin to Effexor to get my anxiety under control. I am experiencing some moderate drowsiness. I've been told it will go away, but how can I deal with it until it does? I'm a grad student and I have a ton of work to do that I can't focus on.

I want to start yoga to add to my diet and exercise regimen and to help with clearing my stressed out mind. There is a yoga studio where I live but my schedule as a graduate student does not permit me to attend any of their offerings. • What's the best way to recycle my batteries?

I live in Auburn, AL and I frequently use a handheld GPS device when I do field work. It goes through AA's pretty fast. So I have a bit of a collection now. I want to safely dispose of/recycle these batteries. Does anyone know of a place near me or a website that can help. (I already checked out www.batteryrecycling.com)

  • What is a good oil for homemade tortilla chips?

I found a recipe for baked tortilla chips and I would like to try it. It says to use vegetable oil to moisten the tortillas before baking, but is there a better oil to use in terms of keeping saturated and trans fats to a minimum?

    Thanks!

  • What are some cultural difference in what makes a woman "beautiful".?

I am doing some research on the views of other country's and culture's on what makes a woman "beautiful" or "desirable" as part of my therapy for body images issues. The western world, particularly America, has a very sick ideal of beauty that has drastically changed in the last 100 years. I want to know if there are still other cultures that value larger women or women that do not fit what we see in the movies and ads.

My internet searching has been a bit futile so I am presenting my inquiry to the masses here as I know there is a wide variety of cultures represented here.

  • What are some tips on keeping snakes out of your path and keeping out of theirs?

I am a geologist doing my field work in east Alabama. We have a few venomous species here. I have never dealt with the possibility of snake encounters before and I am a little nervous. Mostly I stay on roads where the rocks are exposed, but I do have to venture in the woods and near creeks. What are the best ways we can avoid each other? Thanks.
