What is a good car value for a tight budget?

I am a graduate student and my finances are tight. My 91 Nissan Sentra finally developed a problem not economically sound to fix. I've had it for 9 years and its the only car I have ever had so I am new to car buying. I am looking for some advice on some good, reliable cars out there that are a good value for the money. Obviously, I am looking at pre-owned vehicles.

I know prices vary from place to place, but I want some makes and models to focus on first so I'm not drowning in options.

Any advice and suggestions would be appreciated.

Buy another Nissan, the new Sentra is a good choice, or the Altima. Hondas and Toyotas are good choices too.

I always go for toyota if I want a preowned. Though resale value is higher, Easy to fix and more reliable. If you will get it with less than 100,000 miles, You will have more mileage to go. My bad experiences was on Fords. Even some other name brands uses Ford made parts. eg. Mazda 626 uses ford transmission which has a bad reputation after 110,000 miles.

My choice is a 2000 and up Saturn SL1 or 2003-2007 Saturn Ion. It's easy to park, great on gas and reliable. My daughter has one and never had a problem.
