What are some cultural difference in what makes a woman "beautiful".?

I am doing some research on the views of other country's and culture's on what makes a woman "beautiful" or "desirable" as part of my therapy for body images issues. The western world, particularly America, has a very sick ideal of beauty that has drastically changed in the last 100 years. I want to know if there are still other cultures that value larger women or women that do not fit what we see in the movies and ads.

My internet searching has been a bit futile so I am presenting my inquiry to the masses here as I know there is a wide variety of cultures represented here.

The Pacific Island men prefer their women to be larger rather than skinny. because in our culture, a larger women is seen as healthy, whereas, a skinny women would be viewed as sick. however, i am over generalising, where in our generation now, more men a turning more to the western views of beauty. just look at most of the pacific island footy players/stars, their wives/girlfriends are skinny, models, not to mention now it is rare that you will see them dating an island girl!!

I have quite a few friends from other countries that I made in the past few years at work. I have two friends from Africa one from Kenya and the other girl is from Nigeria. They both tell me that the men "back home" prefer them heavier because that means that they are rich enough where food is not an issue. Another thing most men from Africa think women are beautiful with gaps in their front teeth.

I know a lot of people from Hispanic countries. The biggest thing I have noticed with them, they are obsessed with their hair. A girl from Colombia tells me that every street there are hair salons. I am not sure if they are as worried about their weight like we are.

I think tastes differ even within the US based upon culture... I grew up in the South, in Louisiana. I was always rather thin... and my facial features were different than the beauty ideal for that part of the country. I was often told I was too skinny. I moved up North and people accepted my looks fine... in fact, I got many compliments about my looks in the Chicago area.

there is an african culture that favors women with big butts and stomach because it shows she is good for a child. my sister is a good example she is a very large girl and she went to canada/america and she got alot of attention over there becuase of her huge butt. but back here in aus its not very desirable as we are a more focused on a fit well built girl.

look at the ones with the rings on thier neck and the chinese foot binding the idea of a woman with small feet was appealing back int eh what ever centry in china.

    Google the term "Golden Ratio"

You will find some information that will startle you if you have not already gone through this line of study. Beauty and the human perception of it can be defined with mathmatics.

Standards of physical beauty are pretty much the same throughout the human species, with variations for racial and tribal differences. Facial and body symmetry along with apparent health and fitness being among the top requirements for "beauty".

the black community values a larger woman than the mainstream whites, but not exactly full-figured or fat. they tend to prefer pear-shaped or hourglass women with curves
