Why has my kitten become so sleepy?

I brought home a 6 month old kitty last week to save her from the shelter. At first she was very scared of her surroundings but she came around and has been playing with the toys I bought her. But today, a week after I brought her home, she has slept all day. She hasn't eaten today and she won't play. She isn't running a temperature, or has any visible symptoms of illness aside from lethargy and no appetite. Is she just recovering from the stress of her move, is she just sleeping like kitties do, or should I be more worried. It was just strange to see her go from playful and jumping on the curtains to just sleeping all the time. She is responsive to my love and purrs whenever I pet her.

Update:

She hasn't been spayed or been to the vet yet....but will be soon. I can't imagine she got into anything toxic...I have nothing in her safe room that could hurt her. I saw her drinking last night and this morning....

That's a tough question. It doesn't sound that odd to me but I am not there to see. I suspect that your little kitty was just happy as heck to have a new place but took a while to adjust. She probably didn't sleep well the first few days and is just making up for it now that she feels safe.

I'd say give her a couple days more and see if her behavior improves (the big concern is lack of eating more than the sleep; cats sleep a lot).

I would call your vet to get her checked out, just to make sure she isn't getting sick. I recently took in a young kitten, maybe four months old, because she's got an upper respiratory illness. There are other kittens out there, none as sick as this one. The kitten purrs and rubs against me, but wasn't eating around me or drinking water. I'd seen it eating and drinking when it was outdoors. Long story short, which I hope will help you out, is that when I let one of the others in and fed it, the sick one immediately went to eat and also drank when that one did. It was such a classic case of monkey see monkey do (or kitty see kitty do) that I chuckled at the sight of the two. Unfortunately that second kitten snuck back out but I'll see if it wants to come back in tomorrow. It's supposed to rain tomorrow.

My thought is that your kitten may be lonely or scared. Do you have any other animals? Maybe, if you can afford to, it would be a good idea to get a second as a playmate. She may see you as a protector and source of affection, but might not exactly realize where the food and water is and that it's hers to eat and drink from. And since you're not going to be eating or drinking it, she might be a little uncertain. The whole monkey/kitty see scenario.

If you can't afford to get a second kitten, be it adoption fees or future vet visits or food buying, you might want to use food specially formulated to be attractive to picky eaters. Royal Canin has one for adults, which I have in a link below. They also have some good kitten food. I would look there. Sometimes it's on sale at sites like petco.com or petsmart.com

If you have any doubts regarding kitty's health it never hurts to make an appointment for a check up. Kittens and adult cats sleep anywhere from 18 to 22 hours a day. Cats temps also run a bit higher than humans but not so noticeable to our touch. If she has the third eyelid (inner eyelid) covering 1/4 or more of her eye this is a sign of her having some medical issue brewing. Also any discharge from her eyes, nose and the usual signs of an URI (upper respiratory infection) or breathing difficulties. Rule of thumb here, when in doubt, have her checked. I hope this is of some help to you.

cats are just weird------and while that may seem much too much of a generic statement it's true.

    They just are.

Further------they go through phases and my guess is in about three weeks you will wonder why the hell it doesn't just tone down and rest a bit.

Clearly there is always the outside possbility of some sort of liver malfunction or coronary sort of burp but barring the unusual it's just being a cat is my guess.

You probalby have a neighbor or two like that------the only difference being the utter unpredictability of the cat (although I do have a neighbor who.........well, never mind).

    Cats can drive you nuts.

    It's gonna be fine.

Clearly my theory here presupposes a lack of any sort of bug spray issues.

    good luck

i like cats but i'm not gay you know?

    (That's a joke.)

My cats, when they were kittens were very playful, but they were comfortable when they came in to my house and very use to people, their litter was braught up in a very calm loving environment. If they are very young, they sleep like babies. When we got sparky the dog, he slept a lot but we found him emaciated in our garage, once we got him his shots and put some nutrition back into his system, he pep right up. He was the runt and his mother must have snuck into our garage and left him there. I would wait about a week more if she is not playful by then I would take her to a vet. Chianti, (my other cat) when we first got him, he was sleeping more times than not, but that subsided after about 4-days to about a week, then he was more playful too. The litter your cat came from may not have been as loving or calm. I dont want you to worry, just try to show a lot of attention and love.

Your cat is drinking is a good sign.

I hope your baby will be ok.

Doesn't read as something very serious. She may be simply reacting to a change in the weather.

Might be a good idea to get her to the vet promptly to help alleviate your concerns. As long as she is drinking, that is important and you stated she is. A cat can go off its feed for a day or so, but you don't want her not eating for too long.

Is she spayed? Has she been to a veterinarian? Could she have eaten something toxic? I would call a vet on the phone at least. Watch her. If she is not drinking water it could be serious

It could be that she's getting used to her new environment. Maybe tired. She might [most likely not] get sick, but I don't think it'll be too bad.
