How can I get good, but low impact, cardio?

I recently signed up for a daily fitness program. Its 4 weeks and I am in week 4, but I signed up for another 4 weeks. I developed some very bad knee pain. Last week my doctor told me I had patellofemoral pain syndrome. My knees are causing me a great deal of discomfort and I have to keep low-impact. But I feel I am not getting a good cardio workout at the daily session. The instructor makes sure I take it slow to avoid injury. What is something I could add to my day that is low impact, but gives me the cardio I need?

Update:

I should add I have no access (or money to access) additional equipment. Otherwise, I'd be on an elliptical in a heartbeat. (My school has a free gym, but its hours do not fit my schedule.)

    pilates. maybe the exercise bike.

  • Try the Gazelle glider that Tony Little advertises. It's easy on the joints and you can set it for as much cardio as you can stand. No shock on the skeleton.
