I live in Montana and our winters are about the same as Vermont winters (more or less) and our chickens do just fine. They'll need a shelter, of course. We just have a small shed with a window and we use a big heat lamp during the winter.

Our biggest problem is just the predators. Make sure they're well protected!

First of all, there are cold hardy breeds which are better suited to northern climates.

Second, provide an insulated house with plenty of pine shavings and no drafts. They only need supplemental heat when it's 10o or below. They need to adjust to the cold on their own. They will need to go outside during the winter, so if it very warm in the chicken house, they won't be able to be outside. And if the power went out, they could not tolerate the cold if they haven't been acclimated to it.

    Good luck, chickies are awesome!

  • there are certain breeds that are made for cold weather. I like the idea about the heated coops, but if you get a certain breed of chicken for the cold, you will only need it in the winter.

Of course it is. You need to provide a heated chicken coop for winters.
