Which franchise is the worst in the history of major league baseball?

Update:

I should've posted more details. I'm not looking for the single worst season. I'm looking for the franchise that has had the most failure over the most years.

I would have to go with the Phillies.

    a) they have more than 10,000 losses, and...

    b) since their inception in 1883 (125 years) they have only one Worlds Championsip (1980), five NL penants (1915, 1950, 1980, 1983, and 1993), and have been to postseason play only 10 times (1915, 1950, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1993, and 2007)

Thats alot of losses, and explains why Philadlephia smells so bad.

Well, the worst single-season record is the Cleveland Spiders back in the 1890's. The worst current team is the Devil Rays, followed by Texas (if I remember right), and finally the Phillies. Because of their longevity, I would say the Phillies are the worst franchise.

I'm only going to consider current teams. There are several of them in the conversation, but I think you have to single out the Texas Rangers as the absolute worst. Drunken monkeys could probably field a better team than the morons who have been running that organization since its inception. It's really an astoundingly bad franchise. Other contenders are the Phillies, Cubs, and Nationals.

Even though they have had more regular season success than the 10,000 loss Phillies, the Cubs haven't won a World Series in 100 years. It doesn't get much worse than that, especially in this era of it being champion or bust.

The Philadelphia Phillies, they have over 10,000 losses as a franchise. The Phillies are nearly 2,000 games UNDER .500. It's going to take alot of wins to overcome that. I don't know about you, but I think that is pretty BAD.

No doubt the Phillies. The Cubs seem to be playing better and Tampa Bay seems to start winning. Then the Texas Rangers are pretty bad.

  • Yeah the expos/nationals franchise is the worst because they have been around for a while and have yet to win the world series.

I have to go with the Expos/Nationals franchise. They have only one playoff appearence in 40 seasons.

Cleveland Spiders they went 20-134 in 1899
