Why is the code "DR" given to debit?

Just wondering...

A "CR" code is given to Credit transaction, most probably because it forms a abbreviation. However this does not make sense for Debits, when it is given a code "DR", because there is no 'r' obviously. So why is the "DR" given to a debit transaction, what does the 'r' mean?

The term comes from the Latin word "debere" which can be abbreviated to "dr". Also can mean "debit record".
