Fishing Lures?

I fish every once in a while, but I always use worms. I have never used lures. When is the best time to use a lure? And what kind?

I am going to a pretty deep lake. Probably blue gill and bass. Which one would be the best.

Update:

ah I found exactly what is stocked in the lake.

bass, hybrid sun fish, crappie, bluegill and catfish.

4 big bass fishing artificials is the way to go (other than live bait like goldfish, shiners, and pan fish) 4 you because you are a new-b i would recommend a crank bait, spinner bait, or a soft plastic worm.

i would try to fish the crank bait in open water, brush, and stumps, cast it out and reeling is the way to use this.

the spinner bait has to be one of the most versatile bass lure around, but you will have the most luck around lily pads, and other weeds. i would recommend get, a white and black spinner bait with a willow blade.

here is a video about the the worm.

one thing the guy didn't say is that the last step would been to pull the very TIP of the hook out of the worm (it should look bout the same) fish the worm around brush, weeds, rock, etc.

as 4 blue gill and crappie use a beetle spin, or a small crank bait.

cat fish won't usually hit lures

lure fishing is just another aspect to fishing. Some people consider bait fishing unsportsmanlike...others depend on lures to get a reaction bite from the fish, because fish dont always want to feed.

a good lure for trout and will likely work well for bass, bluegill and other smaller species are rooster tails, panther martins, and kastmasters.

    for bass jigs work well.

Overall plastic worms are your most veratile bait. I'll include some websites that will teach you how to rig them. SOme of your better quality plastics are made by Manns, Yum, Gary Yamamoto, or Zoom.

Deeper lakes with rocky areas or what are called rip-raps (large rocks used to form a dam or shoreline) can be fished with another type of plastic called creature baits. Effectively they are fished the same as plastic worms.

another good bait for these type areas are crank baits. Bomber, Rapala, and Manns make good crank baits that can dive to a certain depth. Rapalas DT series will tell you exactly how deep it goes. Example: A rapala DT-6 "Dives-To" 6 feet.

lures are great for bass. considering they are usually protective and territorial and will bite even when not hungry. just try to find some spot where u think they nest, usually around some brush or wutever.
