One of the beer vendors who sell beer to riders as they board the Metro North in Grand Central told me its legal to drink on that train. That surprised me, as its generally illegal to drink in public locations in New York State, since we have an open container law. I can't say for sure he was correct, but those vendors are always there with their carts selling beer and there are cops all around, so I would guess it is surprisingly legal. I imagine you could get a ticket for disorderly conduct or something of that nature if you got drunk, though.

As strange as this may sound....it is illegal to drink alcohol on the Metro-North train if you BRING YOUR OWN....especially if you are going TO New York City (only the New Haven trains have that "bar car" so that's okay).

It is NOT illegal to drink alcohol LEAVING New York City since they do have vendors right outside some of the track gates selling beer (I did this a couple of times with no problems from the conductors). As long as you bought it from a vendor (or an eatery in GCT), there's no issue.

Of course, if you get out of line with disorderly conduct, then you're busted.

There is actually a bar car that serves alcoholic drinks on some Metro North trains that run between GCT and New Haven. Not sure which particular trains it's on though. http://www.mta.info/mta/news/releases/?en=080428-M...

Though you can drink alcohol on those bar cars, I'm sure the MTA cops onboard will still enforce public drunkeness rules.
