For a stand alone version of an antivirus, the best in terms of detection and removal is Avira antivir premium. Its detection tops almost all others (except of course G-data which "adopts" two antivirus engines which in return hogs computer resources). It is also an antimalware detecting spywares, worms and trojans and has also a built in webguard which filters internet surfing. It is light on resources and has a decently fast scanning. In terms of a suite (combination of security software products), the best is kaspersky internet suite. It has a good detection and removal, second to avira, a good detection of spywares and other malwares and a good firewall which according to matousec.com in its firewall challenge, is one of the best. It is also low on resources and has one of the fastest in scanning drives. Its downside only is that it has lots of software incompatibilities which if you know how to configure would just be fine.

I'm liking the latest version of AVG. I used to like avast but it wanted me to &!@$ing re-register it a year later and it wouldn't let me.

Norton and McAfee are good... a good free one is Spybot - Search and Desroy
