What suburbs in Newcastle do you recommend to find an apartment?

I'm taking MBA in University of Newcastle in September..which suburbs do you recommend to find an apartment? (that is safe and close to shops). By the way, the business and law faculty is in the city precinct (civic park) not on Callaghan..

Thanks a lot for your help... ^^

that depends on how much you have to spend weekly on accommodation, you could live in Newcastle or surrounding areas, but it would cost more than some were a little further away like Thornton or beresfield.

what you need to do is way up the cost of living close by were your schooling against the cost of living a little further away + the costs of transport to and from uni each day!

the only areas i don't consider a good safe place to live are islington and medford! most other areas are ok!

If you only want an apartment, then try Newcastle, Newcastle East, The Hill or Cooks Hill. There's also a newer area near the harbour that's more of a redeveloped industrial area - it's not exactly near shops, but has reasonable views and is close enough to transport and the city itself.

You could also try The Junction, but it has mostly houses (and fewer apartments). It does have a little shopping centre (supermarket etc). Big shopping centres are Garden City and Charlestown but they're much more suburban and further from Civic.
