Shock collars are best used when you can't be close enough to reprimand your dog with your body. Like there was this dog that chased the tractor on a farm and it took too long for the farmer to get out and stop the dog every time she bit the wheels so a shock collar was the best way to go. I don't use a shock collar I use my hand in a bite motion on his neck or I block him with my body from whatever he's playing with he shouldn't be. But if your talking about barking and you can't be home shock collars may be the way to go. My neighbor uses one and it helped her dog a lot. My dog stops barking when I tell him to because he doesn't want a spanking.

Shock collars are a last resort when barking or jumping the fence is out of control and nothing else has worked. Shocking a dog to behave is not a humane or positive answer to an underlying problem!
Using a shock collar for any other reason is not justified!

Shock collars are used as a very last resort - anyone using them without having tried any other techniques is lazy. There are far more effective ways to train a dog not to bark than making it afraid to bark. I have never used one and never will.

Any reputable trainer will tell you not to use one. I'm not even sure why they were invented. There are so many positive reinforcement techniques out there that will work better and not cause your dog to be fearful.
Clicker training is very popular now. I went to a trainer that used "targeting" where you hold a treat in your hand and get your dog to follow it into the position you want them, and many others.
Is there a particular behavior you're trying to stop?

I've never tried the shock collar and to be honest I never would. I have had a lot of success with 'clicker' training. Rather than punishing the dog when it does something wrong, you reward him when he does something good. It works really well, and your dog will be a lot happier.

i don't like shock collars, i wouldn't want to be shocked so why would i put my dog thru it. I like the spray collars for barking. they work well. i believe there are other ways to train a dog than a shock collar.

I don't feel the need for a shock collar. Dogs will respond much quicker to positive reinforcement, not necessarily a treat, but praise, petting, etc. It is better to praise them for doing something right then to be harsh with them.

I don't use one. You are much better rewarding for good
behavior than punishing for bad. If you use a shock collar
your dog will not look fore-ward to your training sessions and
in turn will not learn nearly as fast. I totally obedience trained
a 3 month old puppy, and taught him over 20 tricks in less
than a month using treats.
