Why are the buttons on womens clothing on the other side?

I've always wondered about this. There must be some reason for it.

I actually know the answer to this one!

A man always dressed himself, and buttons were set for a right handed person to button easily by himself. A woman had many layers of clothes and was often dressed by a servant who would be facing the person she was dressing, therefore her point of view would be the mirror of a person dressing him/herself and that is why the buttons are on the opposite side.

Then you must ask yourself why are the buttons on mens clothing on the right hand side first?

  • earlier clothes with buttons used to be limited to the royal family , where men dressed themselves but women were dressed by their maids so the buttons are on different sides
