How to write music in a screenplay?
I am writing a film where music plays a big part in the story, almost another character in a way like in Amadeus. I have read the script but am still not sure. Do you put lines of lyrics when a song is said to be playing or do you just write....
The song, "Get-up,Stand-up!" plays?
I am writing a biopic: miniseries, that I hope to get on HBO or Showtime channels.
My story is on: Musical revolutionary Bob Marley from Jamaican, his life story told from stories by family and friends at his funeral in 1981!
But I need to know how to write the music in to the film?!
I do not have the rights to the music or Bob's Short but amazing life, yet! I am planning for Will smith to be bob and go to the company with it and hopefully get it made!
am writing this so I have something to show. So they can see why they should give me the rights, I know about the documentary coming and the movie by Rita Marley-NO Woman, No Cry. I have heard about this countless times, I have known since day one!
I just want to know what to do with music, how do you put it in the movie? I am writing this to get Will Smith to use this a project with him going to HBO or Showtime to get them to make it, ever since seeing a scene from I AM LEGEND ON YOUTUBE, I have had concreter evidence as to why Will should be bob.
That scene is...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTLXh_K5tZc&feature...
Once you see it you will agree! It is both funny, heart worming, sad, and true to bob! "LIGHT UP THE DARKNESS..."
And also I am picking the songs because it is a life story so I know when the songs were made and where they fit in....my script is different from all the other's coming out or in the works on bob!
...also music is it is integral to the story, 100 %.
"Are you aware HBO last week approved a pitch for a Bob Marley called "The Legend of Bob Marley and his Wailers"?
I haven't heard who is playing Bob, but that will be announced once the script is finished." I am not sure how true this is but I need to know, because if it is I will have to write fast to fight for my miniseries to get made not the other!
How this is different and my own story:
it is my story because I came up with the style of telling life of bob, it all takes place at his funeral in 1981. And the people who are eulogizing (both Family and Friends from through out his life), are telling the story of there interaction with him and his life at the same time. That is how it is my story and also the title was a little different it was LEGEND: The Story Of Bob Marley and his wailers. (Based on the 1984 special compilation album: Legend: the best of Bob Marley and the wailers.) The news mayn't be on line yet but that guy LA said that it happened and I just need to know the truth!

I'm afraid the general rule is this: You DON'T.
Unless you're already a well-known writer, producers hate writers trying to make decisions like this for them.
You might get away with it once in a while if there's an INCREDIBLY good reason and the track is VITAL, but generally it's a no-no.
I guess if your screenplay is abut Bob Marley then that is quite relevant, but think about it: don't you think an intelligent and experienced director and production team would be able to select a suitable Marley track by themselves?
Finally, to actually answer your question, if you HAVE to put it in, yes:
'Get-Up, Stand-Up' plays.
is a perfectly good way of doing it.

DarthSpencer, that's got to be you. Working screenwriters and readers at production companies have told you, on IMDb, that you cannot write this screenplay until you have purchased the rights. You apparently have not absorbed what they're telling you.
Asking for how-to elsewhere doesn't make it any more legal. You're just not as likely to get people in the know here, compared to Shop Talk Writers.
Legally, agents and production companies can't even read your script when it's finished. They will reject you without having read a word, in order to limit their legal liability for unauthorized use of the rights. Really.
So quit dicking around with this idea and write another screenplay that's entirely your original creation. Maybe if you have some success, you'll be able to afford the rights you must buy.
And, to answer your question, you do not name specific songs in a screenplay, because the music is a whole other set of rights which must be purchased.

I haven't heard who is palying Bob, but that will be announced once the script is finished.

MONTAGE - MOS or A SERIES OF SHOTS - MOS Because those are MOS sequences (Mit out sound), the historical past song shall be dropped in later for the duration of that facet of the enhancing approach. However, for those who desired a distinct song cue, say a work of classical or a distinct track, you would point out the alternative below the header in all caps. Though distinct offerings hardly ever grow to be within the completed movie. I'm a produced screenwriter with characteristic movie and TV credit.

Adding music to a screenplay is frowned upon unless it is integral to the story. But, again there is a caveat - do you have the rights to the music you are wanting to use? If not, go back to the beginning and try again.

darthspenser:
Step away from the keyboard.
Take your medication.
Use your "magical thinking" for some goodness instead of for wackness.
Leave Bob Marley alone.
