Is there a way I can check to see if I site I have visited is using an invisible statcounter (or similar product) to know when I have visited?

It depends on how the counter is set up. I use a cgi script on my site so that there isn't anyway for the visitor to know that he/she has been monitored.

If the webmaster uses an outside 'free' counter, then they have to add the code for the counter into the html code of the page. This you can see for yourself by right clicking on the body of a webpage and selecting 'view source'. From there you can see if there is a counter in the code.

An example of an 'outside' free counter would be here: http://www.mermeliz.net/phoenix-online/#characters if you look at the bottom of the page, you will see two 'ipstat' counters. if I had made the images 1 pixel square you wouldn't see them, but as the image is loaded onto your computer, it is counted and pinged for the ip address to where it is going, (your machine).

There is no code or any indication that your being monitored if the webmaster is using a cgi script. So just assume that you are. The cgi script lists your ip address and what pages, images, and files you vistit/download.

You could check the source code of the sites home page to see if you can find anything that looks like a counter, but if you don't know html or javascript that would be difficult.

most websites will keep a log of IP addresses that access their site and a lot of times this check is run on the server where the pages are loaded so you might not see any indicators in the source code.

Most web servers offer this feature as a normal part of their functions.

I would say it would be a rare case where a website was not tracking visits.

View source. This code is usually client side JavaScript.
