How do you obtain a valid drivers license with no SSN?
I've been living in the us for about 12 years give or take a few. I have no Social Security Number, but i do have a Tax ID Number. I just turned 18 this past may, and i have been trying to get my drivers license. If anyone knows any way of getting a license without using a SSN, please post the answer to my conflict. For all other questions in the answer section, I will respond in the details section.
Well I am going to college in Manhattan, I live on LI (New York). I already applied and received a student visa.
I am Portuguese, I am not willing to risk buying a SSN because friends of mine have already bought some and have been jailed for some days because of this. I rather do it the legal way, even though it will surely take longer.

Some states allow you to get a driver license without a SSN like New Mexico, Oregon..........
But if you are let's say you are in California and you don't have a SSN you will not be able to get a driver license.

What is your status in the U.S. at the moment, i.e. which visa, I ask since you have been here 12 years, which means you have been here since you where 7 (give or take a few years).
Either way, if you do not have a SSN and you are not eligible for one, then just call down to your local Social Security Office and ask then to print you off a letter stating that you have either been denied a SSN or that you are ineligible for one - don't forget to take with you, your ID and proof of legal presence in the U.S.
Most DMV's in the U.S. will accept this letter in lei of a SSN. Take a look at your state's DMV website for information.

If you are legal in this country (This is in CA) for eg Student Visa etc..you can still get a DR License. Just check i dont have a SS number on the application. You will have 2 prove ur a student with ur student visa tho.
