Power steering problem?

I have a 1991 Mercury Grand Marquis.

A few days ago i started the engine, i did not move the cars but when i tried to turn the wheel i noticed that i had no power steering.

I checked the power steering reservoir and noticed that it was empty, i filled it up and i had my power steering again.

The engine ran for 2-3 mins then i shut it off.

The next day i fired up the engine again only to find that i had no power steering again.

Once again the reservoir was empty.

The car only ran a total of 5 mins and i seemed to lose my power steering fluid.

What could be the problem?

This is a old car and i really do not want to buy a new power steering pump if there is a cheaper solution.

I can relate! Last November, my car suddenly started loosing its power steering fluid. I couldn't afford even the money to have it checked out, let alone replace anything.

So, I started out by filling it with power steering Stop Leak. That seemed to slow down the leak, but not stop it. So, I bought Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak. It comes in a white container and is so thick, I wondered if it would pour. To make a long story short, I used two bottles of it, and the leaking quit altogether. Now I use a ps fluid with Stop Leak additive, and I haven't had a problem since.

    No joke.

Obviously your power stearing fluid is leaking , you must trace where from - the problem may be obvious once you have found this out. eg a leaking pipe (pin holed may only leak when under pressure)

You need to find the exact cause of the leak in order to evaluate the cost of repair.

most common issue is the valve on the steering rack. Could be up for a change over rack! Depends how much you want the car.

The other answers are on the right track. In addition it could be a bad reservoir. Which may be available separately.

Could be a gasket or hose leak. Check under the car for fluid.

maybe there is a leak in one of the pipes. or the thing that holds the power steering fluid. idk what else it could be
