I always use Boots for eye testing and then on to the site below. They knock Specsavers for service, quality and price.

Ask if the person who is fitting you for glasses is licensed. Many states require licensing for opticians and that should at least give them some credibility. There are some real hacks out there who I wouldn't let build me a birdhouse, let alone glasses. Like others have said, referrals are best.
You also will likely do better with an independent optical rather than sears, walmart, target, etc. Usually the owner is an optician and has a stake in your satisfaction.

Are you looking for an optician or an optometrist? An optometrist is an eye doctor, who performs an exam for eye health, treats eye disease, and prescribes lenses for refractive needs. An optician is the person who would help in selecting a frame, grinding the lenses to fit the frame, etc. Your best bet is referrals from people you know.
