You don't need anything too special. You do most likely want swim wear, but you can wear regular clothes. Just make sure it is something that you can swim in. Also, you do NEED a coast guard approved lifejacket. This is for when you fall or let go, it will help keep you up.
I've gone water skiing/knee boarding since I could walk, and have never had this happen, but if you fall and the skis hit you on the head there is a chance they can knock you out. Which is another good reason why you should have a lifejacket.
If it is your first time, make sure you go with someone who has done it before. Hopefully they can give you some good advice. The ropes/handles will make your arms hurt. And make sure that when you stand up to lean back as hard as you can. If you lean forward, it will be harder to stand up and you have a greater chance of falling or hurting your arms more.
