(This answer assumes that you are located in the US)
In most areas there are already more digital broadcasts than analog ones so the boxes work right now. Full power TV stations already transmit both analog and digital signals.
If you are located in an area that gets broadcasts through translator stations you may not get any digital broadcasts even after 2/17/09. The transition date of 2/17/09 only applies to full power stations. Low power stations (like translators) are exempt.
