I am trying to start a charitable foundation for children...?

I am trying to start a foundation in my sons name, in honor of him, for children that have some of the same problems as him. I am a stay at home mom, so I have plenty of time to do so. I was wondering how I would go about doing this. What are the first steps? Are there any good sites that would be helpful?

Some of my main questions would be...

-Do I have to register the name?

-How much money do I need for start up?

-How would I find a web designer that would help me for fairly cheap since it is a good cause?

Any help would be greatful. I live in Arizona, so who should I start contacting?

Thank you in advance!

There are several sites with good information about starting your nonprofit org. The resources at the Foundation Center (look under FAQs/Getting Started) include some easy to understand tutorials on how to get your nonprofit started, and also where to start looking for funding. The IRS web site, under charitable organizations, has lots of information you will nned to know as you get this organization established.

Although the process for establishment is a bit difficult, you shouldn't need much money to do so, and in fact, you won't be in a position to do any fundraising until you have your charitable organization established, so you should definitely review those resources first to see what is involved before you contact a lawyer or firm to do this for you.

  • what exactly does your son have? I would look up whatever he has, (if it's autism for example) and start there. If it's a well known disease there will already be a foundation set up, but you can set up a chapter in your neighborhood if they don't have one. The organization would help you set it up.
