In all respect i would say that the story of Great Britain's five year struggle against the rest of Europe is the greatest story of the war. The first photo that comes to mind is this on of a air raid warden looking to the skies over london in 1940.

St. Paul’s cathedral is in the background of the shot.
Later in 1941 the area around the cathedral is destroyed yet it is still standing in defiance.

and around the same time their is a photo looking up at the steeple and in the background evidence of a dog fight over london between the Royal Air Force and the Luftwaffe.

Then in the next the real damage of the area around the cathedral can be seen. But it was still standing.

In all respect i believe that these photos are the real struggle of the war. The lifting of the flag over the Reichstag was staged. It was not of the moment. The real attack took place in the early hours. And the raising of the stars and stripes on Mt. Suribachi was in fact the second time that the flag was planted. They went back after the first planting to take the photograph.

There are so many stories, no one pic can encompass the conflict. But I like the flag raising at Iwo Jima, and the sailor kissing the nurse in TImes Square when the end of the war was announced.

The graphic pictures of Buchenwald or Auschwitz. Photos of the attack on Pearl Harbor, or the flag raising on Surabachi in Iwo Jima !

The first picture that comes to mind is of course the most popular one, that being the flag over Iwo Jima.

The pic of the young man staring at the photographer after taking Omaha beach. He was muddy, smoking a cig, and looking at the camera like "what the he ll just happened."
