UPS package handler?

has anybody worked as a UPS package handler before?

i heard that it requires a lot of work because you have to lift packages nonstop that weight from 35-70 lbs.

how often are there 70 lbs packages? most of the packages are light am i correct?

i am just wondering because i am really interested in this job and i need to work out because i'm planning to join the military in about a year and with a job like this it would definitely help.

I spent 3 1/2 yrs of hell working UPS, if you will be loading the trailers, the average package weight is about 35 lbs., working part time, they expect you to load approx 1300 pkgs. in a 4 hr period, if you are lucky enough to get a "puller" position, you will stand next to conveyor belt and sort an average of 4000 packages down chutes for 4 hrs most of the HEAVY packages are call "irregs" or "overweights" and it is a rule that you gt help with it even if you can handle it yourself

if you can handle physical work, go for it, but I dont reccomend making it a permanent job, I was lucky enough to get out of there

Source(s): looking at the answers above, DO NOT use a back brace more than one or two days a week, too much use of the belt prevents your back from growing stronger and will cause you problems in the end oh, and invest in a good pair of gloves

I have, and it is non-stop movement. after the first day, you won't be able to move, but after that it isn't too bad. very few of the packages are 70 lbs and a back brace is highly recommended

Most UPS drivers are pretty buff, but it's hard to get in. The pay and benefits are excellent, but you usually have to start part time. That's what I was told.

If you are going into the military, then handling "packages" probably isn't the way you should work out!!! Don't ask....don't tell.

everyone is considered a package handler...but I drove a tug and pulled loads out to the aircraft to be loaded....all I did all night was drive back and forth

Its strenuous work. make sure you get a back brace cuz eventually daily trips to the chiropractor will get costly.

Yes definitely...u need to carry many heavy boxes.....and i know someone who is a UPS delivery man and he had back problems..he has his own massager.....chiropactor.....and therapist....its really hard...But may i say they get paid PRETTY WELL....but take care of ur back....

dude 70lbs isnt a lot of weight, 170lbs might be an issue by yourself, but if you can pick up yourself then you can pick up 70lbs ...not unless you weight 69lbs
