Calling about an interview?

Last Monday I handed in my application and resume to the front desk woman at a company, she said the HR manager would be in soon and call to schedule an interview. (I am aware that I should only hand in applications to the person directly in charge, this was my only day off from work this weeks and I had no choice).

By Friday I still had no call, so I called to inquire the status of my application. I was directed to an answering machine because the HR manager was in a meeting. I left a message. It is now Monday and no call again.

I do not want to nag at them but rather let them know that I am still very interested in the position.

Should I call again today? Just leave it alone? Maybe drive there and ask in person? HELP???

I used to be that "front end person" of a company. I was specifically trained by HR how to week through applications and give her the ones that met the qualifications they were looking for.

I don't know what kind of business you are in...but, in my experience there were hundreds of apps. and/or resumes turned in...HR does not look through all of them. They look at the best ones that fit the job.

Being too forward is not a good quality. Being overly assertive and anxious are not good qualities. Calling too much is annoying to not only to HR, but the person that you are dealing with.

I would try for other jobs...you may not fit their criteria.

I would wait until mid week. If you called Friday, since this is Monday, you really gave no time for HR people to review your resume and do what they need to do. Weekend does not count as days in business.

On Wednesday, call and politely express your enthusiasm and ask if you can setup an appointment to meet. You'll have to walk a fine line between sounding interested and enthusiastic, and being impatient and stalking.

DO NOT drive over and ask in person. That really puts the staff on spot. People in business, especially in HR where they have to be careful both legally and ethically hates unannounced visits. They might revert to the safest answer - The classic saying is, "if you really have to know NOW, the answer is NO." You don't want to do this.

I would drive up, and say that you were visiting a friend in the area, and you were wondering why you haven't heard from the HR manager. Just be polite and charming, but urge them to call you back soon as you are going out of town. I think that the fact you went to see suggests you are interested in the job, without coming across as desperate to keep on phoning. I think it will be fine, and you should assert yourself, and definitely don't leave it alone!

I would wait until tuesday or wednesday to call them back. It's very likely that the HR doesn't go into work on the weekends and maybe he/she was too busy friday to return your call.
