If you already have windows XP installed..

you can install Vista, but it depends if the windows vista you are trying to install is an "upgrade" or "Full"

if its an upgrade, you can have a duel boot with XP, if its Full, then it will complete erase the XP partition, and vista will be Over it, i know this because i installed a copied (i suppose pirated) version of windows vista home basic, and i noticed that it was not an upgrade, it was full, so i didnt like it, so i had to reformat my gigabyte computer back to windows xp professional, with all the service pack 2, and service pack 3, and the mobo drivers, and whatever applications i needed, but its really up to you on what you wanna do, your the boss, not the Machine.
