You get stars for how fast you finish the courses. It would help to unlock the jetsetter aka Aero Glider and use it with funky kong. You can still get stars without being first in all the courses (you can even get rank A with silver ) but you still got to be first in that cup.

Basically, you earn good rankings in all of your grand prix races, and then you wait and then you get a trophy! Then you unlock more until you get a star prix race...If that's not the star you were talking about, you can also get a powerup star by hitting those un-red blocks with exclamation points!

Don't get hit with items, hit other racers with items, stay in first for the majority of the race, finish in first, and get a good time.

come in first in all of the races in the cup that you are doing hint-its easier if you are on manual
