Windows XP viruses?
I was browsing the internet recently, running Runescape and a fan site at the same time, and suddenly, the browser closed, my background changed to a blue screen with a box in the middle saying "Warning! Spyware detected on your computer! Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer." A strange program "Windows antivirus XP 2008" installed itself on my computer, and began scanning, slowing my computer down so much that i could hardly close it, then it started popping up everytime i closed it, eventually i deleted enough of its files to crash it, and now when i walk away from my computer the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH pops up and says somehitng about being unable to find various files, then it goes to the startup loading screen (black screen with the blue bars moving across) but if i hit any key, it acts as if it was in sleep mode. Anyone know anyhitng about this virus? its name? perferably how to get rid of it? I ran the computer Associates Antivirus and it found nothing.

antivirus xp 2008 is pretty pesky malware. your antivirus can't detect this thing, because malware is different thing than virus. and antiviruses only deal with viruses.
you can ignore all the messages related to antivirus xp because they are fabricated. and blue screen of death is part of antivirus xp infection, it changes screensaver to look like BSOD. as you still see these signs of antivirus xp 2008 i assume you hadn't deleted all files of antivirusxp. i recommend this tutorial http://www.2-viruses.com/remove-antivirus-xp

I am using Avast 5.0 free version on Pentium IV with 512MB RAM and Windows XP for Home Use and I only update its Virus Definitions and I see that my PC has speed more than Core 2 duo Laptops that have heavy versions of Avast or any other Antivirus Like Avira, AVG etc...

Antivirus XP 2008 is a rogue anti-spyware program that displays false and exaggerated scan results. Thankfully, though, there is a totally free way to remove this program.
Please visit this page and follow the guide in order to fully remove this program and any related malware:

Please note that many of the answers to your question state that you should download and install Xoftspy or Spyhunter. Both of these programs only scan your computer and do not remove anything for free. They are only being shown in order for the poster to make a commission. Instead only use programs that do not require you to purchase them in order to remove found infections. The guide above includes a program that will remove this infection entirely for free.
Also, do not use combofix or vundofix as they should only be used under supervision of trained helpers.

It sounds like a nasty piece of malware; I would suggest downloading AVG 8.0 Free Edition, download the latest updates and scan when you reboot your machine in "Safe Mode". This will limit the applications that will start.
Also download Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and run that, remember to run this applciation regularly. Use Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer whenever possible.

Run a scan. Norton, AVG , Avast are free antivirus software. Ad-aware, Spybot, Ewido are free spyware removers. You can download free softwares at http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html . You can also run a free registry scan using utilities from http://re7.info/
