Gas smell from my car's air conditioning?

Yesterday I was SUPER low on gas in my car, but it was hot so I turned on my Air Conditioning. A strong smell of gas was coming through the vent. I thought maybe it was fumes because the gas was so low, I don't know. I filled up the gas tank and it still smelled like that until I got on the freeway and was going faster. The smell seemed to come back when I got off the freeway and slowed down.

Any idea what is going on?

your evaperator core could be leaking, and the smell coming through your vents is pag oil (a strong musty smell) ac lesson!- the evaperator is the component which is loced inside the car's dash. when refregerant cycles through the system it travels through an orfice tube or expansion valve which causes the liquid to evaporate and freeze the aluminum evaporator. then air passes through the evaporator into the car. p.s. it could also be a faulty drain tube which is causing moisture to sit inside the heater case. check the drain tube coming out of the firewall before you get too serious. because evporator replacements are not a small job, the dash actually has to come out of the car to replace it.

If that smell is coming from your own car, you've got a leak. It has nothing to do with A/C, you're just pulling in outside air, so the question becomes whether it was your car or somebody else's with the leak. It also should have nothing to do with being low on gas.

I had this problem with my car before reason why your getting this smell is because your very low on gas and is starting to run on fumes which is causing it to ventilate through you air conditioning. also check all your hoses and make sure there are no cracks, holes, corosion on them. if there is an opening in your AC hose it could cause the fumes from the gasoline to leak into the ventilation and which would be the cause of that. Hope this helps!
