Nuclear Power?

As I understand it nuclear power has always had the problem with the spent fuel and nuclear wastes. I know that low radiation waste can be stored up to fifty years and be safely disgarded with regular refuse. But then you have the High radio active stuff ( Plutomium, Uranium and whatever) that have a half life of over 100,000 years.

Is there any one out there explain if transmutation is working?

And what are some of the basics behind it?

Basically what makes it safe to pursue Nuclear Power?

With today's technology, a lot of the spent uranium can now be reprocessed and used again. France has been doing this for more than 30 years without incident and have reprocessed enough to power the country for 30 years. We should not refer to spent material as nuclear waste. Also keep in mind that our navy has had nuclear powered submarines and carriers for the last 50 years, and there have been no casualties. Nuclear energy does not emit greenhouse gases, so the enviro's should be happy about that.

What makes it safe is the procedures put in place to handle and store nuclear waste.

Nuclear power isn't inherently safe, it's made safe. Just as coal, hydro, and gas-fired electric plants aren't inherently safe, but made safe.
