There is a Wolf-Rayet star in Sagittarius that has one of it's poles pointed towards the Earth, about 8,000 light years away. It isn't a matter of hitting the Earth, the Moon or Jupiter. The beam isn't that narrow, and will hit all the planets.
But none of these planets will be vaporized in a gamma ray burst. The Moon and Jupiter, for example, would hardly notice it. Gamma rays, which are high frequency and high energy light, could cause life on Earth considerable damage. The bursts are short, so only half the Earth would get a direct blast. However, it might remove 25% of the Earth's ozone layer, and that could have world wide effects, including extinctions, mass starvation, and so on.
It should be noted that this particular star may not be sufficiently accurately aimed at the Earth, may not actually produce a gamma ray burst, and so on. So, while it is cause for alarm and study, it is not a done deal. Even it it is found to be a death star, who knows? It may be found that we have a hundred years to prepare, and a space shield could be constructed to protect our home.
The reason that the dinosaurs went extinct is that they did not have a sufficiently robust space program.
