to make it clear u have to imagine ur teeth in ur mouth...
there are five surfaces for each molar {teeth behind the canines.}..
upper surface { occlusal}
the surface to the front tooth { mesial}
the surface to the behind tooth {distal}
the two side surfaces , not our story....
we use MOD to describe the caries when it affects the mesial, Occlusal and distal surfaces....

Your teacher is probably just using a short version of "Module" meaning a part, piece or section. Mod can also be a short version of "Modify" meaning to change. The International Space Station is built from modules delivered one or two at a time by the Space Shuttle. They refer to some of the Modules by someones name and the word "Mod" as in the Smith Mod. When the Hubble telescope was first turned on it was fuzzy, slightly out of focus. Nasa performed a "Mod" on orbit to give the system some corrective lenses. There is one sure way to find out exactly what your teacher means. Explain how you know and understand "mod 4" means questions 1, 5, 9, 13, 17...... Then ask what exactly the word "Mod" is referring to. Ask if it means "Module" or something else and if it is something else what is that something else. Go get 'em GIMP

It stands for Mesial - Occlusal - Distal, which translates to the biting surface as well as the surfaces that contact the teeth on either side. Usually it is used as shorthand to indicate where the cavities are present and have to be removed and restored.
ie. MOD silver filling on tooth 16 (upper right first molar)
