Since mufflers and pipes are stainless steel a TIG welder would be the best choice, it's all depends how much money you have to spend. A mig welder is a little less pricey and does a good job. a tig welder is good for bench work where you have more control and can be a little more precise and get a more attractive weld but for out of position work the MIG would be my choice

you need a 110 volt mig weld witch can be bought pretty cheep ,for what your wanting to do get one that you can run with sheilding gas and use 25/75 gas.for exhaust I suggest .25 or.20 mild steel wire . I have a 110v hobart (which is now owned by miller).ican can run it5 gas or gasless.but with gas you get a stronger cleaner looking weld.and with .25 or.20 wire burn through is less likely on thin metals such as exhaust pipe tig is pretty exspensive setup but is the best.

A 110 volt mig welder will do fine for your purposes and they can be bought for a couple hundred dollars. It can use an inert gas or flux core wire.
