Should US congress mandate vehicles sold in our country be E85 compliant?
By mandating all vehicles be able to use either gasoline, or ethanol, methanol, and giving the consumer the choice to buy more than one fuel, would that in itself start to control the price by introducing some competition in the fuel market?
Upwardgaze you sound like a political comercial, do you work for the oil companies?
E85 vehicles can run on either type, so YOU could decide.... SMART ONE!...
Competition is always good for the consumer in energy and electronics, computers, etc. Your point?

There is alot the federal government can do to make vehicles more efficient, expand alternative energy sources and bring down oil prices. But little will be done with oil men running the government. They are effectively siphoning money from most areas of the economy into the oil companies who have all-time record profits. Any measures by Congress will probably be vetoed until we have new leadership.

So we can burn MORE food, the ethanol koolaid has been sold perfectly. Why not try to push hydrogen powered cars were the exhaust or by-product is water? I'm pretty dam tired of the price of milk, eggs, beef, or any other thing that is connected with the price of feed, going up weekly. As far as the price of gas I was thinking, the price of gas is contingent on supply and demand, as well as the speculated price on the market. Wouldn't the price be driven down if we introduced more supply. Drilling in ANWAR, and the continental shelf would do this. It would also cut into the market share of Saudi and the other oil producing nations. What better way to gain market share back, but to lower price. The liberal congress knows this and when obama gets into office, they will put this in motion and look like a hero. All the while we are suffering at the pump.
Congress is denying us the opportunity to compete. There is still a moratorium on building new refineries, exploring for new deposits, and the red tape to upgrade existing refineries has made it not cost effective. Competition is good but there is none here
BTW whoever gave me the thumbs down, piss off. I guess the truth hurts
Source(s): OMG enough with the "oil men" bs. What about the anti oil men {and women} that refuse to allow us to more energy independent. I read the there is more than 2 centuries worth of refinable oil shale in the rocky mountain area. this would buy us sometime to perfect new energy sources - UpwardgazeLv 51 decade ago
There's an idea ... use food to power vehicles instead of feeding the world, particularly the poorer countries, who are most impacted by this insane policy.
Just trying to help the 'planet' - and to hell with the people that live on it.
When technology arrives - and it will because there is major profit to be had - the problem will take care of itself if the government gets out of the way.
Edit: No, I don't work for the 'oil companies'. But then again, I don't work for Microsoft, either, who posts up to ten times the profit margin of Big Oil. Should their 'windfall' profits be subject to more taxation? Before you answer, know that no Corporation actually pays taxes. They are passed on to - guess who? If you said the consumer, move to the front of the classroom.
We agree! Competition is good. Now, how can American energy companies compete with international suppliers who are allowed to utilize their reserves, while ours aren't? If we increased internal supplies, it would decrease the prices we pay for it - without shifting the cost from the energy industry to the food industry ... which is one reason why our food prices are soaring currently as well. Right?

considering that the other fuels, ethanol, methanol, bio diesel etc, are more costly to manufacture and create far more enviromental waste than the production and use of normal gasoline the entire change is pointless, so why should the goverment mandate vehicles with a choice that arent superior to the original,if the buyer wants a E85 compliant vehicle, then thats up to them, but if they intend to run gasoline then why be stuck with a car with all the extra gadgets and equippment that they dont need, thats just more things to go wrong with it.competition wouldnt help in the fuel market place, because ethanol is more costly to produce than fossil fuel based gasoline and costs more at the pump, along with being far underpowered compared to gasoline, regardless of what the "green "people claim ethanol is far weaker than gasoline, try driving using it sometime and watch the power and milage drop.

I'm for anything like this. Hope it happens, soon.
