Should guns be registered?
I was all for the Supreme Court's ruling on the 2nd amendment, but guns do need to be registered. There are those that say it is unconstitutional, but the Constitution says nothing on registration. There are even petitions out to repeal. It is extremely necessary to have a registration system. This system is how guns are traced back to criminals in investigations. Also, people are trying to do away with the concealed weapon permit system and just let people carry. Personally, I think this is idiotic and I seriously wonder what the people are thinking. I know people that do have these permits and I know to get one you have to have a spotless record. This is the only person I want to see carrying because I know that the only reason they have it is for their protection. So give me your opinion on the issue.

legal gun owners such as myself do register guns..the problem lies in the illegal owners, ill rephrase that
gun theives do not register guns
nor does a second hand owner need to register guns but again, 99% of criminals do not buy a gun from a legal source
the problem of making it a law to register is that the illegal guns still wont be registered, nor will the stolen guns..instead they will go investigate the guy who lost the gun
the biggest thing is i could throw away all my guns but then a knife weilding criminal could come in with just a knife and i could do almost nothing about it, however if he comes in to my bedroom now..he wont be a criminal anymore, and he wont need cab fare home
im an avid conceal and carry lover
if a criminal thinks u maybe have a gun..he wont mess with ya
not that i really carry much anyways because long story short, if i shoot or kill someone outside my home chances are the criminals family will sue me for everything i own and sadly in MN theyd probly win too
we have not enacted "the law of common sense" here

Should guns be registered?
Absolutely not. Should knives be registered? Why don't shotguns and rifles have to be registered? What about pencils, screwdrivers and letter openers? Should they be registered as well since they have been used to kill people? Make no mistake, the government wants firearms registered, because it will make them easier to confiscate. The first step Hitler took was registering all firearms, and look where it got the German public. No ******* thanks.
You say, "Also, people are trying to do away with the concealed weapon permit system and just let people carry." People can just carry now. In most states, you don't need a permit to carry a handgun as long as it is not concealed. You only need the permit if you want to conceal it. Not many people know this, because people usually choose to get the permit to avoid drawing attention to the fact that they are armed. Just lately in my state, a man was wearing his handgun in it's holster on his hip in plain view. Well, this freaked out a lot of the people on the bus, because they have an irrational fear of guns and they called the police on him. He didn't have it out waving it around or anything. The cops checked him out and then apologized to him for wasting his time.
What is up with people who seem to have this fear of honest law-abiding people carrying handguns? Don't you all understand that the criminals are already carrying these handguns if they wish? A silly little thing like a permit is not going to stop them. Neither will a background check. I will never understand it.
EDIT - RM
You say, “Why is it that honest law-abiding people are always using their legal weapons to mass murder?”
Why is it that honest law-abiding people are always using their legal cars to drink and drive which leads to the deaths of hundreds every year? Are you going to argue that we should stop letting ALL citizens have cars, because of the actions of a few? Do you think about what you are saying, before you say it or do you just blurt it out?

Most states don't require gun registration. Unless the retailer handed you a registration form to sign and said he would send it in for you (which sounds really, really unlikely), I would not assume that the dealer took care of anything for you. When you purchase a car, sometimes the dealer has you sign paperwork so they can title and register it for you. Other times they don't do that for you. It's your responsibility to put tags on your car and register it--not the dealer's. Think of guns the same way--if the dealer didn't say he did it for you, assume he didn't. Also consider that it may not be required.

It all comes down to this: Criminals, cheats and despots and general idiots "F" up the world for the rest of us. If it weren't for those types, guns wouldn't even be needed, except perhaps for hunting.
Personally, if a criminal were breaking into my home, I would want to be able to freely shoot him as many times as I could until he either stopped moving or crawled out of my house and was no longer a threat.
If the government takes away that right, criminals will know that the only thing they have to worry about is perhaps a baseball bat...but they'll be armed, won't they? After all, they don't obey laws...

no, the problem i have with registering guns is that its a law that only affects law abiding citizens who wouldn't think of committing crimes. if there is someone out there who can't own a gun ( due to probation, past crimes, mental health, etc.) it is not required that they register because that would be considered self-incrimination, and therefore against the 5th amendment. I also believe that the gov't and police forces should focus more on the laws that are already on the books that are being ignored and looked over rather than try to write new laws that have no value.
Source(s): ok nomobrian, if somebody steals your car and commits a crime using it you should be charged with their crime also, according to your logic. And Ervin_Parker - It has been shown that bullet imprinting or ammo microstamping doesn't work, this coming from the FBI and other dectective agencies, also there is around 1 firearm per person in the US, so if the average person was as likley to slaughter thier family as a criminal was to use a gun then there would be massacres every day in every town. the majority of gun owners are sane, respectable, and trustworthy. R M- who are these honest law abiding people you speak of commiting "mass muder", sounds like scare tactics to me - Joseph SLv 41 decade ago
We can observe the liberals coming out to spew their usual nonsense (and shallow, feeble remarks), especially since they're angered that the Constitution was upheld.
I can understand the points people are making here, but in all honesty I can't say I feel comfortable with gun registration. It has the feel of an infringement.
I'm going to repeat this again: I can understand the arguments, but I don't feel comfortable with it.

Most definitely. And because it's so called law abiding citizens who obtain guns legally who are well known for slaughtering their entire families, other loved ones, judges whom they don't agree with, law enforcement whom they see as villains and any other of numerous peaceful and innocent human beings... gun ownership should come with an annual mental evaluation... guns don't kill... people do. It's been well established that legal gun owners are just as likely to kill as any criminal as evidenced by the legal gun owner in Kentucky who had a bad day at work and killed is supervisor and five co-workers.
I also support weapon finger printing where it's rifling fingerprints are put on file at the factory

No, guns don't need to be registered. Registration is the first step.

All guns should be registered so that when criminals steal them from your house, you can be charged for the crimes they commit with them. If you let a criminal get hold of your gun, you are just as responsible for their crimes as they are.
If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns (that they stole from under some redneck's mattress when he wasn't home). That's where the majority of illegal guns comes from.

why dont we just hand em out? who can be bothered with registration! screw keeping track of criminals, lets sell bombs too! lets open the jails and give the inmates M249's!
