77 olds cutlass supreme- oil smells like gas :-(?

:-(

ok I was working on my car the other day, it hasn't been started in about 4-5 months,

I checked my oil dipstick it was kinda thick and smelled liek gas, I only know of 2 things it could be are there any others?

1. Fuel Pump

2. Gasket on Intake Manifold

IF YOU ARE NOT MECHANICALLY INCLINED PLEASE DO NOT PRETEND YOU KNOW THE ANSWER!

ONLY EXPERIENCED AUTO MECHANICS PLEASE ANSWER!

Update:

ok p.s. do not say "change your Oil"

Im an experienced mechanic and its ignorant to assume that it hasn't been changed,

plus changing your oil wont do anything except delay the outcome, because you didn't FIX the problem that originally caused gas to get into your oil

just need new rings on piston . find a shade tree mechanic to do it do not allow for them to bore the heads if the heads are bored get a new one . and try to find the original head not a factory after market . avoid chrome and aluminum . does it smoke any if not you can go for a while with no worys . just need to change oil more often . you have an open throttle this will help clean out the heads . turn on engine hot and poor vinegar down the carb while holding the throttle at a good high idol speed . and then run till it has all gone out of the exhaust .about every 3 fill ups on a full tank add a half a moth ball to the tank . if the tank is half full add only 1/4

Source(s): fuel pump diafram is no were near your oil if you remove it no oil will come out . your car is not fuel injected it does not burn the fuel as well the fuel today has an additive for fuel injection. I love the old cars despise the new ones . if you have any Q my door is open . owner of 71 Lincoln continental with a big block 400 . my prise posesion . you must have a 305 . great tork low rpm . PS do not put HEET or any additives in you block . or in your tank those are for newer modles .

First , warm the engine up ,, drain the dirty oil and change the filter, drive the car and see how it runs, and check the oil daily ,,, It's either the fuel pump, or the choke is sticking on and flooding the engine with gas . And to the bone head that said the fuel pump is nowhere near the oil, He doesn't know much about motors

If it hasn't been run for 4 or 5 months there wouldn't be any gas in the oil It would have evaporated. It sounds like the oil is very old and that's what you smell. That's probably why it is thick. For no more than oil cost that's the first thing you should do is change it.

A little something called your started is most likely the problem. You can replace the starter which is anywhere from 150-300 just for the parts (not counting labor) depending on the type of car.....Call an auto parts store they can tell you the price over the phone. Or if you are short on cash - you have to remove the starter anyway - take it to an electrical repair shop they can repair starters (replace the brushes) for around 30 bucks (usually). And no the radio will usually not work if the battery is dead. But i guess it could - i just editted this post after reading the other suggestions. It is still a good idea to test the battery before removing anything else.

It sounds like you have one or more cylinders that aren't firing, which allows unburned gas to get around the rings and into the crank case. Do a tune up with new plugs, wires, dist. cap, and rotor. Look at the old plugs to see which ones look black and wet. If that cures the problem great, and if not, a compression test or better yet a leak down test is in order to pin point where the problem is. Concentrate on the cylinders that had the fouled plugs. Also, as was mentioned the fuel pump could be the culprit. The diaphram could be ruptured and allow fuel to leak into the oil.

Its the gasket. Gasoline is leaking from the cylinders into the oil. Thats pretty dangerous, theres a chance you could have a engine fire.

I had this problem too ,it might be that your car is running too "rich" not sure what this means ,all I know is that they had to recalibrate my plugs ,but I would go for a second opinion ,Im no grease monkey but like I said I had the same thing happen to me.

Running too rich. Very rich! You're ruining your cylinders by washing off the oil!

rings have dryed up / run with low weight oil for about 100 miles and that should solve your problem.

It could also mean that the oil has not been changed in awhile.
