Is it rude to ask about someone's personal life the first time you meet them?

I called a friend and a relative of theirs picked up the phone instead and introduced themselves to me. They asked what my last name was and then immediately started asking if relatives of mine were divorced.

I thought that was rude. Am I right? Or is this normal practice the first time you speak to a person on the phone?

Yes it is rude. If you get these sorts of questions, turn the tables on them and ask them if they have ever been married, or perhaps whether they are still a virgin. You could also ask them what political party they support, what their religion is, whether any of their relatives are mentally retarded or have seizure disorder, and if they have ever been locked up. That should shut them up.

Personally I consider this pretty rude and uncalled for. This is NOT a normal or considerate thing to say when speaking to someone for the first time. Although I haven't been in your situation I'd imagine I'd tell the person asking the question that I don't feel comfortable discussing the subject. If they insist I'd promptly end the conversation.

Well if you find yourself in this position again just ask them for their social security number. Explain to them that you want to run a full back round check on them including all the financial details of their life and any possible criminal record that they might have! Sure its rude and extremely odd !

This is very rude behavior, no matter what culture your from that type of question is wrong. You were not in the wrong at all.

Your friend must have talked about you or something to warrant those type of questions.

No one can say it's something normal.Since the other person was rude to you, you should just be rude to them.
