Manny has a clause in his contract that gives the Red Sox the option of extending his contract for two additional years through the 2010 season at $20 million in 2009 and 2010. Manny wants the Red Sox to pick up this option because no other team is going to pay him that kind of money at his age. In addition, Manny would remain on a good team with the chance for more championships. The only way Manny is not on the team is if Red Sox management elects not to pick up his option. Therefore, the decision for Manny to go or stay rests in the hands of Red Sox management and not Manny.

I know you NY people don't want to hear it (I'm a Braves fan and thusly impartial) Manny isn't going to opt out of his contract. The fact is that Manny is loved in Boston, and I think that Manny cares more about that then money or winning (two things he also gets in Boston). Manny will be Manny this offseason and he'll give the media and fans reason to think that he won't stay in Boston, but if he does pull an ARod and opt out, just like ARod, he's not leaving town.

Opt out? It's a *club* option, and his production has been way down in '07 and '08, in addition to the other issues with him. Manny is gone after this year.

Are you people deaf? It is a *team* option. The Red Sox can either keep paying Manny $20M per year for two more years, or they can let him walk. Manny does not get to decide, and the Red Sox are not stupid enough to keep him.

I think he stays with the Red Sox but if he did sign with the Yankees, would the Red Sox fans call him a traitor like they did Damon? Just curious. Cause I still say he stays with Boston.

I don't think he's going anywhere. Seems like for the last 4 or 5 years, all we hear is how manny is going to get traded, or not get signed.
Although I do think it would be both ironic and amusing if he ended up in Houston.

He will stay w/ the Sox, he's already publicly stated that he likes it there and wants to stay. The Sox have the payroll to keep him happy.

The answer is the same for every free agent in every sport. He'll go to whoever pays him the most money.

he won't opt out, but if he does, his small little brain will lead him to wherever there is the most money
