Most people want to reload the OS because they are having poor performance or because of a suspected virus infection.
You can often solve the problems and avoid having to reload the OS, by running a scan for spyware, adware and hijackers that are taking over your computer.
Download Spybot: Search & Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.h...
Install with all updates.
Re-boot your computer, and go into Safe Mode. Do this by hitting the F8 key once every second while re-booting the machine. When the boot menu loads, select the Safe Mode with Networking option. Wait for it to load Windows Safe Mode. This will take a long time and will look very different from what you are used to seeing.
Open Spybot and run the scan while in safe mode. Fix any problems it finds.
Open and run your anti-virus program. Fix any problems it finds.
Re-boot back into normal Windows mode and see if most if not all of your problems are gone.
Good Luck.
Source(s): Reloading an OS is a very time consuming and involved process. To be avoided if possible. First of all, you will loose all your music, video, pictures, and files. You will also loose all of the programs you loaded after you bought the computer. You may also loose many of the preloaded programs that came on the machine. You will have to update Windows with all the patches that have come through since the OS disk was created. This can be upwards of 120 update patches that will require dozens of reboots. Not the easy thing that many on here seem to think.
