Problems with my CD burner!?
Hi, having numerous problems with my CD burner. I have bought 2 different brands of BLANK cds to burn on and the burner is not picking up that they are blank and keeps saying that all the disks are full (which obviously they aren't as they are brand new out of the packet.) When I right click on the drive, it also says it is full if there is no disk even in it. I have tried uninstalling the driver and then reinstalling it again several times and this hasn't worked and it's not the disks as neither brand works and one of the brands I have had before and it used to work fine. In fact, I burnt a CD the other day with this brand and now all of a sudden it's not working. Before I go and get fed up and reformat the computer, could someone please offer some more suggestions on what I can try to do to fix this as reformatting would be a real pain if it comes to that.
Thanks!

Okay You need to try these steps like the other friends said in here...
1. You can check your drive or try to clean your Drive Lens by the Drive lens Cleaner
2. You may Use the Burner Software that got with your CD/DVD Burner when you buyed.
3. Some Spyware or other malware attacks to your operating system may make errors to your registry and thus make some problems like this.
4. Or you may check your system that is virus free.[Install Antivirus Program like Norton, Kaspersky or other antiviruses with updated databases]
5. May be you just Re-install the Windows or your Operating system
6. Or may be your Drive Lens is damaged or Weakend
7. Or your last try ...Buy a new one...
Hopes this may help you..THANK YOU..

Well Jules, it sounds like you need to update your firmware. I would start by updating your CD drive's drivers.
--Right click My computer. Then properties> hardware> device manager. Expand the DVD\CD ROMS folder & right click on the appropriate device, and select update driver. Select "yes, this time only",then next. Select "install automatically", then next. That should do it.
Or go to the CD drive's manufacturer's website and download the driver for your model.
If you had listed the specific model of drive, I could have been more specific on this one.
--To update your firmware start with the links below. They will give you a feel for what firmware is, how to, and the pros & cons to updating. Please spend some time reading about firmware before you change it.
UPDATE:
Sorry, should have put this somewhere near the beginning. NERO has a free utility that may help called Info Tool.
P.S.- Have you tried System Restore?
System Restore: Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> System Restore
Sorry for such a long answer but there are a lot of possibilities.
Good Luck!

Cd burners - Optical drives wear out get dirty and or get out of alignment. Try one of your disks on another burner if it works, just replace your optical drive ($25 to $50). That's cheaper than having a techno geek look at it ($100 per hour plus parts).

Use Nero.
Make sure the Blank CD is recognised. CD-R or CD+R.
Better still install a DVD Writer, it still burns CD'S
