Baking clay at home at what temp?

My son just brought home from school his sculpture made from clay and it hasn't been baked as yet. Am I able to bake it in a normal oven? If so what temperature and for how long?

Thank

Ask his teacher what sort of clay it is. If it's polymer-based, you can fire it in your home oven. If it's ceramic, you will need a kiln. You can also ask a local community college to fire it for you. The teacher should know, if it is ceramic, whether it is low fire, high fire, whether it's already been bisqued, etc.

    hope this helps

Different clays are treated differently. Some simply air dry, others require a high temperature kiln.

Polymer clay like Fimo can be baked in the kitchen oven at 80 C (convection) for 30 mins.

But its unlikely that your kid's school project uses polymer clay. (The fumes smell rather toxic to me).

You'll need to check what clay it is. Its probably just air drying clay and leaving it alone for 48 hrs should do the trick.
