For Chinese wedding, normally red packets, usually given as we attend the dinner reception.

Friends - Around RM150 per pax attending

Relatives - Around RM800-1000 per family of five attending. (depending how close they are)

These are the amount hubby & I give. Not sure whether other Chinese give the same.

For close relatives, we also give jewelleries, such as bangles, necklaces, pendants, etc, to the bride during the tea ceremony. The groom, sorry-lah, double standard, just RM10 angpow.

For friends - I normally will ask the newly wed what they prfer within a dollar value range. If they are not able to come up with an idea, then I will ask if I can buy shopping vouchers for them.

For family and relatives - Red packet @_@

usually, most people would give money. but its not about how much we think is appropriate, but how much we have put on "other expenses", from monthly budget.

if you're freaking rich, the amount of $50 or $100 would make you a laughing-stock. so, rich people have the tendency to 'show off' a bit. so it will be at least $1000.

In this day and time, most couples have all the household goodies already....with the cost of weddings, and the honeymoon, we usually give money.

Depending on WHO it is, if it is a close relative, usually a $100.00 check inside a pretty card.

Friend or distant relative $25.00 in a card.

Anywhere from RM50 to RM100 is more than suffice an amount for any wedding.

Other than that, the usual like household items, maybe wine (if they're into alcohol) or why not a picture taken of their memorable day=)

I give photo album because they can use it to fill in their wedding photos, tea set or a nice photo frame. Before giving a present I'll ask what they need, so I won't waste my money on unwanted present.

    Hmmm...

For my cousin's wedding...it was a wooden carved jeweled box.

    My dad says,

If its a rich couple, don't give money. Better to give gifts.

If its a couple where they work full time or need money, than its money.

He also says it depends on how close you are to the person.
