the 20 GB, 60 GB, and the 80GB ps3's can play ps2 games and has backward compatibility. The 40 GB ps3's have backwards compatibility but for playstation games not ps2 games. Out of all the systems with both ps2/ps1 backward compatibility, the 80 GB ps3 is the only ps3 in one in production (meaning it on sale). And i dont know about price drops but eventually they will drop later on in the year
Well, I hope this helps =)

20gb and 60gb are the best for backward compatibility they both use the Emotion engine. These are hard to find but E-bay has some new and used units for sale. They are not manufactured by SONY anymore.
No wifi for the 20gb
40gb cannot play PS2 games
80gb uses software emulation to play PS2 games, only about 70%-75% are compatible.
No announced price cuts from SONY, but if I had to guess maybe around the holidays just don't expect anything major.

The 80gb now has an emotion engine in it. So just get that. And SONY is losing an average of $200 USD on each console. They make their money with other things like games and HDTVs. So for there to be a price drop any time soon is out of the question.

well sony has actually lost money with the ps3 because they already had price cuts so i dont think they will lower the price anytime soon...also as to which one you should get get the 80 gig...trust me u will need the space and i belive that it is the only one with backwards capability i know the 20 gig could to but they dont sell those anymore and i am not to sure about the 60..anyway go with the 80gig.

60gb is almost impossible to afford now since they r discontinued. luckily i have one : )
60gb can read ALL ps1 and ps2 games.
80gb can read 3/4 of the ps1 and ps2 library.
