What are some financial investments that did well during WWII but plummeted once the war was over?
I am writing a work of fiction. One of the characters was a wealthy man throughout 1930s and the early 40s. I need him to lose his fortune by the end of 1944 and thought perhaps he could have invested heavily in some industry that was highly profitable until the end of WWII.
For instance, a friend suggested ship building. But I need detail I can research.
Any suggestions?
Thanks "bearstirringfromcave"
I knew that! (and my face is red)
Did you know you cannot edit your question once it's submitted? All I could do was utter a swear word or two and hope everybody would assume it was a typo. What was actually going through my mind was the period from late1944 through the end of 1945. But did I write out that out? Noooo.
Your suggestions are good ones. I'll definitely research farming and ranching ---- and gas masks -- great idea there, too.

Does it have to be the very end of the War? Well I guess you have the 1944 thing going on but with the war ending in 1945 - - - --hmmmmmmmmmmmm. Ship building remained a going concern well into 1946 while most heavy industry shifted from the demands of war to the demands of peace; automakers shifted from tanks to cars, etc.
The two ways in which people lost heavilly around the time line of 1945-1950 was in Movies & Radio. Forced to divest themselves of their theater chains the movie industry crashed and burned during the late 40s and many a person who had invested in them found themselves at a loss. RADIO thrived during the War seemed set on doing so after the war, and then around 1948 TELEVISION came into the picture and by 1952 Radio was a losing proposition..
Farming & cattle ranching are actually your best options!!! Due to the lessons of World War One, American farmers thought they could profit smartly from World War Two but did not factor in a flood grain & beef from Australia. So American farmers & ranchers did o-k but the vast profits they expected did not materialize and many suffered.
The main way that people lose their fortunes is by investing heavilly and banking on a mass amount coming in just before a loan is due to be paid and then when, often by skulduggery, that massive amount is delayed, their World gets shredded.
That is as helpful as I can get.

PS Gas mask Sales plummeted - - - at the start of the war everyone thought Poisonous GAS would be used, at the end of the war huge massive warehouses were crammed with unused gas masks!
