My husband and I just moved here last July. We had heard that Dearborn Heights was a bad idea but what we've found is that we love it!

There are a few bad streets which yes you might consider ghetto-ish and some areas that are unkept with businesses that have failed and been boarded up. The police in the area were very kind when I asked about the area b4 buying and made me feel like they really are interested in keeping the community safe.

Our home is located just a few blocks from the city of Inkster and across the street from Taylor which is a little less desirable but more affordable area. Our home was in the $78, 000 range but there are homes in the swankier area that are very new and very expensive. As you see from this Wikipedia map, DH is weird shaped. We live in the bottom part of the I shape. The swankier areas are in the thicker top part of the I shape.

We have found that most of our neighbors are friendly, take pride in their homes and are great. We mind our own business and think and act smart and have had no problems.

As for the schools, we don't have kids but we still get the school system newsletter in the mail and it seems like they've got some great teachers and fun teaching going on. The libraries are nice and have lots of programs for kids, teens and adults.

And I have to give a thumbs up to the best pizza I've ever had from Crazy Pizza on Telegraph at Annapolis. Actually there are lots of nice restaurants and local businesses if you shop around in the DH and Dearborn areas!

I'd say go for it and just shop smart with your head, heart, and gut for your new DH house or apt.!

Dearborn Heights is still full of pretty nice houses, good schools, and has low crime. The only questionable areas would be a block or 2 from Inkster and Dearborn. Even those aren't bad.

Carolyn is most likely thinking of Dearborn not Dearborn Heights.

Its not all that ghetto, of course a few parts of it maybe considered ghetto by people who hold really high standards.

It's actually a pretty safe and affordable area, so you won't have anything to worry about if and when you move there.

dearborn heights is not a ghetto

I don't know much about their schools so I can't say if they are good or not

    its still fairly nice

but it depends on how close you are to the boarder of the rundown areas of Detroit, Inkster and or Redford

    schools are decent

    It's a bedroom community.

It is considered to be ghetto. I wouldn't send my children to school there either.
